The Union Plus Scholarship Program was founded in 1991. The aim of the program is to assist students who come from working families attend a college or university. Since the inception of the program, more than $4 million dollars has been awarded to needy students. As such, if you meet the below eligibility criteria, this scholarship may help defray the cost of education for you! For additional information about the Union Plus Scholarships, check out the information below:
The Union Plus Scholarships are offered in different amounts. In general, the amount of the scholarship varies from $500 to $4,000 and depends on the strength of a student’s application. While students can re-apply for funding each year, the scholarships are not renewable.
In order to be eligible for the Union Plus Scholarships, the applicant must have a parent or spouse who is a member of a union (retired union members are also eligible). In addition, the union member themselves can apply for funding through this scholarship program. The eligible union member must have been an active member for at least one year.
You may wonder how students are evaluated for this scholarship, since there are numerous people who meet the eligibility criteria. While no minimum grade point average is required, it is recommended that applicants hold at least a 3.0 grade point average. In addition, since the essay responses comprise a large portion of your overall scores, applicants are encouraged to spend time creating, editing, and revising their essay answers. Students are judged based on their social awareness, appreciation for labor, academic achievement, and their level of financial need.
When applying, it is important to complete your application prior to the deadline, since late or incomplete applications will not be reviewed. All applications must be received prior to January 31st of the application year. The applications become available in the middle of summer, so students should check the website for application form after June. Students who are chosen to receive the award are picked by a Scholarship Committee. This committee makes their decisions by the end of May. As such, recipients are mailed a decision letter in early June. In addition, the list of recipients will be posted online and students will receive an e-mail when the list is made public.
Students who are thinking of applying may want to see previous winner’s and the amount of the scholarship that each recipient was awarded. That information is available at this link. Students are able to use these funds at a variety of different programs, such as colleges, universities, and trade schools.
