For nearly fifty years Target has been a major player in the department store chain. Years ago, Target created a mechanism to give back to the communities where their stores are located. One of the ways that they do this is through scholarship competitions. Target has a few different awards that are open to students from different backgrounds.
Target’s Hispanic College Fund: In partnership with the Hispanic College Fund, Target provides scholarships to students who come from parents of Hispanic descent. The scholarships range in value from $,1000 to $5,000 and there are fifty scholarships available each year. In order to be eligible, student must show a combination of financial need and strong academic merit. Furthermore, only applicants who are majoring in business can be considered for this scholarship. Students are required to attend an accredited institution that is located in the United States, in order to receive this scholarship.
Target Fashion Scholar Program: This scholarship provides one lucky student with an award worth $25,000. In order to be eligible, the applicant must be a sophomore in a CFDA school. The grand prize winner also gets an all expenses paid visit to Minneapolis to see the Target Design Team. In addition to the grand prize, four runner-ups will receive an award worth $5,000.
Target Foundation Grants: Target offers a number of different grants. Some of these grants are open exclusively to students who are majoring in certain fields, such as social services or the arts. Applicants should be sure to read about each grant in its entirety as every grant has a different deadline and eligibility criteria. The list of current grants can be seen at this website.
Target/UNCF Community Leaders Scholarships: In partnership with the United Negro College Fund, target created a number of scholarships that are open exclusively to students from underserved backgrounds. This scholarship provides financial support to African American students who are seeking their first undergraduate degree. Students must enroll at one of the UNCF member institutions. Furthermore, all applicants must show financial need, academic readiness, and a commitment to community engagement. The scholarships provide eight students with an award worth $5,000.
Target Stores CSFA All-Around Scholarship Program:This scholarship provides four students with $10,000 scholarships and thousands of small scholarships which are dispersed across Target stores. Theses awards are open to current college students and high school students. In order to be eligible, students must be 24 years of age or younger. The goal of the scholarship is to reward students who have maintained a difficult balance of strong academic performance, volunteer work in their communities, and who continue to pursue their goals while exceeding all other requirements. Students who are interested in applying for this scholarship must do so before the application deadline, which occurs every November.
The Target scholarships are a wonderful alternative to merit-based awards, as the eligibility criteria is typically less stringent. Additionally, the variety of scholarships offered ensures that there is a scholarship to meet the needs of most students.
