Like many things in life, the Nordstrom Scholarships program is constantly changing. In the past, this scholarship was used to support a variety of student endeavors. The program currently continues to provide financial support to students who were selected at the winners of the 2015 cycle. However, scholarships for the 2016 cycle are on hold and it appears that no scholarships will be offered this cycle. This is because the company is rethinking how it provides scholarships and the impact it will have on communities. As such, individuals are encouraged to frequently check back on this website for updates to the Nordstrom Scholarship Program.
In previous years, Nordstrom has provided yearly scholarships to up to eighty high school students across the nation. The goal of these scholarships is to help students realize their dream of attending college. Students are chosen for this scholarship based on a combination of community involvement and previous academic excellence.
The scholarship provides up to a total of $10,000 per student. For each of the applicant’s four years in college, he or she receives an annual amount of $2,500 to defray the cost of their college education. In order to apply, students are required to submit a number of materials prior to the May 1st deadline.
Historically, in order to apply for the Nordstrom Scholarship Program, all applicants were required to fil out an application. In addition, the programs require that students obtain letters of recommendation to support their application, write an essay, and send official high school transcripts. The award is renewable provided that students remain eligible.
In order to apply for the scholarship, the applicant must be a resident of a state where Nordstrom is located or attend a school in a state that has a Nordstrom store. Therefore, students who plan to attend school in one of the following states (or who are a resident of one of the following states) are eligible to apply for the scholarship: AL, AR, CA, CO, CT, DE, D.C., FL, GA, HI, ID, IL, IN, KS, MD, MA, MI, MN, MS, NV, NJ, NY, NC, OH, OR, PA, RI, TN, TX, UT, VA, or WA. Students must show evidence of involvement in extracurricular activities, such as those through a high school, community, or church. This may include participation in sports, clubs, volunteer activities, or other hobbies. Furthermore, students must have at least a 2.7 grade point average in order to be considered for the award. All applicants are required to have a clear criminal background check in order to be considered for this scholarship. Lastly, students are required to attend an accredited U.S. institution in order to obtain the award.
In recent years, eighty different students have received one of $10,000 scholarships each year. However, given the upcoming change to the Nordstrom Scholarship Program, it remains unclear what type of scholarships will be available in future cycles. Thus, students should be vigilant in checking the company website for updates and notices about scholarship funding for future years as the program may change substantially.
