The Hispanic Scholarship Fund has over 150 types of scholarships to assist students of Hispanic backgrounds make college more affordable. Since it was founded back in 1975, the program has awarded over $470 million in scholarships. HSF scholars benefit from the program in several ways, such as financial support, mentoring, and networking.
In order to be eligible for a scholarship through HSF, students must be at least one-fourth Hispanic or Latino. Students who have parents from any number of Spanish speaking countries, such as Belize, Costa Rica, Spain, and Peru, are eligible to participate. A full list of eligible countries can be found on the website. High school students must have at least a 3.0 grade point average in order to be eligible to apply while more advanced college students are required to have at least a 2.5 grade point average. The award is open to high school seniors who are graduating and who are planning to enroll in a four-year institution the academic year following their graduation date. Students of any age may apply for these scholarships, making them an appealing choice to non-traditional students who are returning to college.
Students do not need to be legal U.S. residents or citizens. The award is also open to non-citizens, making it one of the only awards to help non-citizen students from Latino backgrounds pay for college. As such, refugees, students with asylum status, and other groups of immigrants are eligible to apply for the awards. Additionally, the awards can be used for students who plan to attend a community college first and then attend a four0year school. Both undergraduate and graduate students may apply for these scholarships. While there is an emphasis on funding STEM majors, there are no restrictions on the major that students can pursue. All students must complete a FAFSA and state based financial aid applications.
The scholarships are awarded based on academic merit and thus, students are not required to demonstrate financial need. The application opens on January 1st of every year and students can begin the application process at that time. When the student is ready to apply for the award, the following website will be useful: https://hsf.net/en/resources/faqs/applying-for-scholarships/.
This website shows all open scholarships for high school students, along with a list of scholarships that will be opening soon. Graduate and current college students can find links to scholarships that are available to students of their level by clicking on the appropriate button at the top of the site. The application can only be completed online and all supporting documentation must be uploaded to HSF’s secure website.
The amount of the awards varies from $500 to $5,000. Applicants are chosen for the award based on a combination of academic merit, dedication to community service, personal strengths, and leadership skills. Students who are selected as winners will be notified sometime between June and July.
