Do you desire to have the opportunity to study abroad? Are you interested in learning about a new culture in a total immersion format? If so, then the DAAD scholarships may be for you! These scholarships were created to assist academically advanced undergraduate students from the United States with funding to study in Germany. The recipient of this award will get to experience being a student at one of the universities in Germany, while completing an internship or senior thesis project. Students can either propose an independent study option for 1-2 semesters or apply to an existing study abroad program.
In order to be considered for a DAAD scholarship, applicants are required to meet a number of different eligibility criteria. First, the applicant must be able to create and convey to a committee that they have planned a clear internship or research project that requires them to study in Germany. Only students who are entering their junior and senior years will be considered for this scholarship. All applicants must maintain full-time enrollment at their host institution and plan to return to the United States after their complete their degree. Students must submit a proposal that they can complete during four to ten months, which must occur during the academic calendar year at a German university. Students are not required to have a specific level of German language ability, but they are however required to send a DAAD language evaluation form. Only students who have strong grades, letters of recommendation, and a high level of personal integrity will be chosen for this award. Students should be able to show an interest in European affairs and demonstrate how their proposed project will advance their future goals. Additional information about the eligibility requirements can be found at this website.
This scholarship can be used to defray the cost of a variety of different options. Students who wish to write their senior thesis in Germany can apply for funding. Alternatively, students can apply for an internship that is a maximum of three months, which will be part of a study abroad program. Students can also apply for funding for an exchange program or study abroad program costs. A longer internship (up to 10 months) may be funded if it is a required component of the student’s program. In total, the scholarship provides students with a set travel allowance, health insurance, accident insurance, liability insurance, and a 650-euro monthly stipend.
