Computer science is one of the hottest new majors among college students. There are a number of jobs that go unfilled each year, due to the lack of qualified candidates. In an effort to reduce this gap, a number of scholarships have been created to encourage students to enter the computer science field. The list below highlights just a few of the many available computer science scholarships:
AFFIRM Student: This scholarship is open to undergraduate students who are majoring in IT or a related area. In order to be eligible for this award, students must be a college junior or senior who is taking a full-time course load. Furthermore, students must be majoring in a field related to IT and hold at least a 3.0 grade point average. Students must show financial need in order to be considered for the scholarship. P.O. Pistilli: This scholarship is open to to students from minority or disabled backgrounds who are planning a career in computer science. The award is worth $4,000. In order to be eligible, students must have at least a 3.0 grade point average and be in their last year of high school. Students must show financial need and have been involved with underrepresented groups that they represent. Students must reside in the U.S. and plan to major in computer science. Microsoft Scholarships: Students who plan to major in computer science can apply for a scholarship through Microsoft. Students are chosen based on a combination of academic merit, passion, and leadership. Students who come from underrepresented groups are highly encouraged to apply. Students who attend a four-year program anywhere in Mexico, the U.S., or Canada can apply. Additionally, all students must have at least a 3.0 grade point average and be making good progress towards their degree. Shutterfly Computer Science Scholarship: This scholarship is unique in that it rewards both students and their communities in the form of a scholarship. Each student who wins the award receives $5,500 towards their studies. An addition $4,500 is awarded to the elementary, middle, and high schools that the student attended. In order to apply for the award, students must be majoring in computer science and must be at least 18 years old. Only students who have completed all their studies through high school in the U.S. are eligible. An essay and application form must also be submitted prior to the August 31st deadline. Michigan Council of Women in Technology Foundation Scholarships: This scholarship provides an award somewhere between $15,000 to $20,000 to computer science majors from Michigan.
