Do you consider yourself to be from an Asian or Pacific Islander background? If do, did you know that there are numerous scholarships available to students who identify as Asian and Pacific Islander? One such scholarship foundation is known as the Asian and Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund, or APIASF for short. This scholarship program has been open only since 2016. APIASF strongly emphasizes the value of leadership and community service in conjunction with strong academic achievement. In addition, APIASF has a special aim to boost students who are first generation college students who come from families that have a low SES and/or who live in poverty.
In order to be eligible for one of APIASF’s scholarships, students must meet a number of eligibility criteria. First, each applicant is required to be a citizen or legal resident of the United States or the Marshall Islands. In addition, the applicant must meet the definition of a Pacific Islander or an Asian as based on the U.S. Census definition. Each applicant is required to hold a minimum of a 2.7 grade point average and already hold a high school diploma. Students are required to complete a FAFSA application prior to the deadline. In addition, students are required to submit one letter of reference and plan to enroll at an accredit institution that is located within the United States.
For the 2016 cycle, the application opened on 9/15/2016 and remained open through 1/18/2017. Finalists will be notified in April of 2017 and in May 2017 each winner will be notified. Winners will receive their scholarship in August 2017. If you are thinking about applying for the 2017 application cycle, use this link and check back in September 2017 for details about the 2017 application requirements as they are not yet posted.
The value of the scholarships has a broad range. Students may be awarded a small one-time award worth $2,500. However, there are some awards that are worth up to $20,000, which can be renewed for multiple years. In order to apply for these scholarships, students should go online and complete the APIASF General Scholarship Program application form during the open application cycle. Make sure to complete the application in its entirety before submitting it online. Students can log into their application multiple times until they are satisfied that they have completed the entire application. Students can find additional details about the application process at this website.
Want to know more about how to create a compelling application? The funders have created a brief application tip sheet to help you strengthen your application. Secondly, you should think carefully about who you want to write your letter of recommendation. Ideally, you should choose someone who knows you well and who can discuss your academic work as well as your endeavors outside of the classroom. Additional tips are available here.
