Students who are interested in serving their country can earn a free college tuition through aAir Force scholarships. This enables students to attend college without graduating with heavy debt. Students who are interested should know that there are several different types of U.S. Air Force Scholarships.
The first type of scholarships covers the cost of fees, tuition, and provides a small book allowance. This scholarship is generally open to students who are pursuing a technical degree, such as an engineering or science major. The second type of scholarship provides eligible students with up to $18,000 for fees and tuition as well as providing a book allowance. The main difference between this type and the first type, is that the student will have to pay the cost of tuition for any amount over the $18,000 if they attend an expensive institution. In the third type of scholarships, students can receive up to the cost of an in-state public college tuition rate and a book allowance.
Students can apply for the Air Force ROTC scholarship at any time. Once a student accepts a scholarship, they sign an agreement with the United States Air Force. It is at this time that they acknowledge that they are indebted to the U.S. Air Force in the form of a service obligation. If the student is younger than 18 years of age, a parent may be required to also sign the service agreement. Students who sign this agreement are making several commitments. The first is that they will attend a 3-week long summer field training in Alabama. This is located at Maxwell Air Force Base and the training typically occurs in the summer before entering the junior year in college. Students also agree to enroll in classes the following fall, enroll in a major related to the scholarship they receive, complete certain training requirements according to the proscribed timeline, and accept a commission upon graduation as an Air Force Officer and serve for a minimum of four years.
In order to apply for the scholarship, students must complete an online application. This form can be filled out anytime between June 1st and December 16th. After completing the application, the student will receive an e-mail with additional information. The information will include directions on how to submit all the required materials. A completed application includes the following materials: high school transcripts, counselor certification, physical fitness test, extracurricular activity sheet, grade point average, and scores from either the ACT or SAT exam.
