The Regents’ Scholarship

The Regents’ Scholarship program is a scholarship that is offered through Texas A &M University. The goal of the scholarship is to aid students who are the first in their family to attend college with reaching their educational goals. The award is offered on a first come, first serve basis to TX residents who demonstrate financial need and who are the first in their family to attend college. Every year, first-generation students can apply for one of these 900 scholarships.

In order to be eligible for this scholarship, students must meet a number of different criteria. First, the student is required to be a first-generation student. More specifically, the program states that this means that if either of the student’s parents has earned a bachelor’s degree, then they are not eligible to apply. Secondly, students are required to complete the FAFSA application. Students are required to enroll at Texas A&M in order to receive the scholarship. Only students who come from families with income under $40,000 per year are eligible for the scholarship. Students are also make satisfactory academic progress. For undergraduate students, this entails holding at least a 2.0 grade point average. Lastly, only students from TX are eligible to receive this scholarship. The scholarship requires that students take a certain number of credit hours each academic year. In some cases, provided that the credit is approved by the college, students can transfer credits or count AP courses in lieu of some of these hours. During the first academic year, students must have 30 hours total and must accrue an additional 30 hours in their second year and 30 hours (for a total of 90 hours) in their third year. These hours can be obtained my enrolled in classes during any of the three terms for an academic year (summer, fall, or spring).

Students who are selected for this scholarship can receive up to a total of $20,000 across four years. The scholarship is awarded in $5,000 increments over a four-year period. Students are eligible to receive the funding in additional years provided that they are making satisfactory progress. Additionally, students may obtain other scholarships with this award.

Students who are interested in applying for this scholarship may want additional information regarding the application process. Students are required to file a FAFSA application before March 15th in order to be considered for this scholarship. Students are considered for this scholarship based on their admissions data and as such, no separate scholarship is required. Students are encouraged to complete their FAFSA as early as possible since these awards are given out on a first-come, first-serve basis until the funding runs out.
