Scholarships for Student Athletes

Students who participate in sports may be eligible to receive scholarships for their college education. Students who want to obtain athletic scholarships may have to search a little harder than students who are seeking academic scholarships, but there are definitely a variety of athletic scholarships available. One of the best ways to obtain an athletic scholarship is to inquire directly with the colleges you would like to attend. The college can help you to determine whether there are any university specific athletic awards that you might qualify for. Scholarships available through specific universities are typically less competitive than large, national organizations where athletes must compete with a larger pool of applicants. However, if the college or university does not have funding available, check out the list below for additional athletic awards:

PCA’s Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship Program

PCA’s Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship Program: This award provides scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,000 to students at the high school level. These awards are open to high school juniors who participate in any varsity or club sport. Students from any of the 50 states may apply for the award. Students must have at least a 2.5 grade point average in order to apply. Applications are open from the first of the year through the end of May and students may apply anytime during the open application cycle. Students are chosen based on a combination of leadership, honoring the game, and personal mastery. Students must submit a completed application, which includes a scholarship form and three testimonials, in order to be considered for this scholarship. Sports Unlimited Scholarship

Sports Unlimited Scholarship: This scholarship provides a $1,000 scholarship to a high school athlete. Students are required to write an essay (between 1-2 pages) on what they think the biggest problem is in high school sports. Applicants must also complete a brief survey. Applicants are judged on the quality of their essay and the winner received $1,000 that can be put towards books, room and board, or tuition. In order to be eligible, students must be a high school senior or a college freshman or sophomore. BigSun Scholarship:  This award provides students with a $500 scholarship. In order to apply, students are required to write a brief essay on how their participation in sports has influenced their career goals and relationship with their family. Any high school senior who will be attending college is eligible to apply. The only requirement is that the applicant be in their last year of high school. Foot Locker Scholar Athletes

Foot Locker Scholar Athletes: This award provides twenty athletes with awards worth $20,000 each. Additionally, one of these winners will receive an additional $5,000 award for exceptional leadership and academic achievement. In order to be eligible, students must be a member of a sports team, either through their high school or after-school sports team. Students must hold at least a 3.0 grade point average and be a citizen of the United States. Only students who are in their senior year of high school and who plan to attend an accredited college or university are eligible. Footlocker employees are not eligible.
