Scholarships for International Students

International students face a number of hurdles when it comes to attending a college in the United States. The application process can be challenging coupled with the task of learning to adapt to a new culture when the student arrives. Many international students are also worried about financing their education. However, many international scholarships exist for students who are coming to the U.S. to study.

One of the most challenging tasks international students face when searching for scholarships is knowing where to look. To put it simply, your first resource should be the college or university that you plan to attend. Make sure you fully explore the website of your future college or university. Specifically, make sure to look at the pages for international students, admissions, and financial aid. Additionally, if there is a separate page that lists scholarships, be sure to look at that page as well.

If you feel that you have exhausted the online resources, you may also want to consider contacting a professor within the department that you will be studying to ask about departmental funding. Many departments are allotted a budget to help fund undergraduate and graduate scholarships. Your department will not know you are looking for funding unless you ask!

In addition to your school, there are a number of resources online to help match you with scholarships. One website, called EducationUSA, maintains an up-to-date list of scholarships available to international students. In addition, students can find information about obtaining visas and other relevant information they may need when planning their studies abroad.

International Education Financial Aid

There are some non-governmental resources that students may also want to explore. The International Education Financial Aid has a list of more than 850 scholarships that are open to internal students. Some of these awards are university specific, but there are some that are open to students studying at any institution. Additional information about the scholarships can be found on their website:
