New Mexico Scholarships

From the Sandia Mountains to the expansive desert areas, students from all around New Mexico are seeking ways to ease the financial burden of a higher education. Many awards exist that enable students to substantially ease the cost of attending school in NM. Some of these awards are available through the state government while others are offered through individual colleges and universities. See below for a list of scholarships available to NM students:

NM Competitive Scholarship

NM Competitive Scholarship: This award was developed to recruit academically talented students from outside of NM to attend college in NM. The amount of the award varies, but recipients receive at least $100 per semester. As an additional benefit, students receiving this award are eligible to pay in-state tuition. Only undergraduate students who plan to enroll in a 4-year college, on a full-time basis, are eligible for this scholarship. Legislative Lottery Scholarship Program: this award is one of the most unique awards that is offered by the state of NM. Using a lottery system, eligible students are chosen to receive a percentage of tuition at no cost. In order to be eligible, students must be residents of both the U.S. and NM, plan to enroll on a full-time basis, plan to attend college the fall following their high school graduation, hold at least a 2.5 grade point average, and must have graduated from a high school in NM. The award can be renewed for up to 7 semesters provided that the student maintains eligibility. NM Athletic Scholarship: This award covers the cost of tuition and fees at any NM state university. The awards are provided through individual institutions and both in-state and out-of-state students are eligible to receive the awards. This scholarship was designed to increase the competitiveness of applicants at NM universities who participate in sports. NM Graduate Scholarship

NM Graduate Scholarship: This award was designed to enhance the diversity of graduate students in NM. Eligible students may receive up to $7,200 per year. In order to be eligible, students must be from a minority group, show financial need, be a resident of the U.S., and agree to accept an unpaid internship at their college, university, or in the surrounding area for 10 hours weekly.

 

NM Scholars: This award provides full tuition remission, student fees, and a book stipend to students who show academic promise and financial need. In order to be eligible, students must have graduated in the top 5% of their senior high school class. Vietnam Veterans’ Scholarship

Vietnam Veterans’ Scholarship: This award is open to NM students who are veterans of the Vietnam War. Students must have lived in NM for at least ten years. Both undergraduate and graduate students are considered for this scholarship. The award covers the cost of tuition, books, and student fees.
