Hacer scholarships are provided through the Ronald McDonald House Charities scholarships program. The HACER scholarship is open exclusively to Hispanic American students, but other specific funding opportunities exist through Ronald McDonald for students from other minority backgrounds. Since its inception, RMHC has donated over $24 million in scholarship funding to students from Hispanic backgrounds.
In order to be eligible to apply for HACER scholarships, students must be less than 21 years old. Furthermore, only applicants who are able to show financial need will be considered for the award. Students must also hold at least a 2.7 grade point average. At least one of the student’s parents must meet the criteria of having Hispanic heritage. Students must be in their final year of high school and must be planning to attend a college or university in the United States. Only legal residents of the United States who live in one of the eligible RMHC Chapter areas will be considered.
The competition for this award is quite high. Winners are chosen based on a combination of academic merit, community service, personal traits described in their personal statement, and demonstrated financial need. The scholarship was created to help Hispanic American students, who may not otherwise be able to attend college, realize their dream of obtaining a higher education.
The scholarship application is open from October 1, 2015 to January 20, 2016. All applicants are required to submit a complete application prior to the deadline. In addition to the online application, additional supporting documentation is required. This documentation includes a copy of high school transcripts, a letter of recommendation, a personal statement, and a 1040 form. The personal essay requires that students provide some insight into their career and personal goals as well as describe academic achievements. A detailed list of community service work is also required.
Five awards worth $100,000 are offered at the national level through the HACER scholarships each year. The $100,000 award is doled out in increments of $25,000 per year for four years. Students must confirm and verify enrollment in an accredited college or university each year. Additional HACER scholarships worth $1,000 are available to students at the local level. Students fill out one application and they are considered for both awards. It is important to note that students may only receive one scholarship. Thus, if they receive the national scholarship they will be ineligible to receive a local scholarship.
Winners of the award are required to enroll in a program for the following academic year following their graduation from high school. The scholarship will be dispersed directly to the institution. Before completing the application process, applicants can obtain some insight into previous winners by looking at the website. A list of previous HACER scholarship winners, along with their photo and a brief description of their story, can be found online. After gathering all required materials, applicants can complete the online application at the following website: https://aim.applyists.net/Account/LogOn?ReturnUrl=/RMHC .
